Ruth Attig, a special education classroom aide at Murphysboro Middle School, in Tennessee went to the college first on Friday to observe employees of Phoenix Modular Elevator and Fager-McGee Commercial Construction install a new elevator in the school.
"I just wanted to see them take action if I have to use the elevators this year," Attig stated.
Attig, who's been employed in the area for 31 decades and been at the middle school since 1993, had been stuck in the old elevator with a student several times.
Allison Allgaier, president of Phoenix Modular Elevator, stated the elevator was first assembled in Mount Vernon. The shaft and lift parts are prefabricated.
"We make sure they are there and ship all over the country and Canada. That one is in our own backyard," Allgaier stated.
Often, lifts created by Phoenix Modular are installed on the exterior of buildings. The lift at the school is entirely inside the construction.
Lynndi Kesler, sales manager at Phoenix Modular Elevator, said that the elevator has been constructed of tube steel and also standard dry wall. It weighs approximately 25,000 lbs.
"It is built no different compared to a stick-built elevator," stated John Holmes, quality control manager.
The rotating shaft and elevator assembly has been loaded onto a flat bed truck and brought to Murphysboro Friday morning.
Considering rain storms were expected Thursday eveningresearchers from Fager-McGee cut on the gap in the faculty ceiling Friday morning, according to Yeyo Granados, vice president of construction to Fager-McGee. They sent a rep to Phoenix Modular Elevator earlier in the week to take dimensions of this elevator. (The rest of the openings to the shaft were cut before.)
After the truck with all the elevator arrived, two cranes picked the assembly, turned it vertical and sat down it on a lawn while straps against the more compact crane were removed. The more expensive crane picked the elevator up and slowly lowered it floors. It will soon be bolted and welded into place.


The hydraulics and electric wiring will be installed, and then the lift will be analyzed and inspected.
"We're just happy the rain stopped," Allgaier stated.
